Utah Lacrosse can’t keep up with big-time competition

The Utah lacrosse team went 1-2 in Florida last weekend, losing to Georgia and Florida State but beating Missouri.

Junior Matt Qualey won the offensive MVP award for his dominating play in the competition. Qualey had 15 goals in the tournament.

Utah lost to Georgia on Friday by two goals despite leading 5-0 after the first quarter. The Utes bounced back though on Saturday and were able to down Missouri, 15-10.

“We had a comfortable lead the whole game,” Utah head coach Rich Levi said. “Some of our reserves played, which was good.”

The Utes found themselves back in the loss column on Sunday against Florida State. The Seminoles jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, winning 13-6.

Utah will resume action at Juan Diego High School this Sunday against Michigan State.

Puttin’ Utes mediocre at John Burns Invitational

The Puttin’ Utes ended the three-day tournament tied for 20th last Friday in the John Burns Invitational in Hawaii.

Senior Nic Larson finished the last round of the tournament with a 2-under-par 70, while seniors Dustin Pimm and Chris Gresh finished with even-par rounds.

Utah posted a 291 on Wednesday, but saw its standing fall slightly on Thursday when it recorded a 297. The best round came on Friday, when the Utes shot a 287 to bump them up to 11-over-par for the tournament.

Auburn University won the tournament and set a new course record with a 44-under-par score.

Utah will head to San Diego on March 10 and 11 for the Farms Collegiate Invitational.
