The No. 1 Westminster Griffins beat Western State College 20-0 on Saturday at Dumke Field in Salt Lake City.
Westminster scored their first goal just one minute into the game. After a long possession, freshman midfielder Kevin Gee scored on a great pass from sophomore attackmen Josh Condas.
A few minutes later, Western State found what would be their best chance to score in the entire game when an attackmen found himself one-on-one with Westminster goalie Dallas McLellan, but missed the goal wide left.
Only 11 players and no coach from Western State were able to make the trip. On the other side of the field, Westminster suited 30 plus players and five or more coaches.
10 Griffins found the back of the net with senior attackmen Rick Larkin leading the team with four goals.
“We are a young team, and as frustrating as it is to play a one sided game, we needed the opportunity to teach a couple of things and get into the game mode, so it was beneficial for us to do this,” said Westminster head coach Mason Goodhand.
After the game, the Western State players looked tired, but each one had a smile on their face. A spokesman and player for the team, Storm Hostetter, said, “The game was excellent. It was a great experience for our young team. It was a good chance for these young kids to learn a little bit about lacrosse. It is hard to play with only 11 guys, but it brings us closer as a team and gets us in shape.”
Westminster will travel to Athens, Tennessee to play No.7 Davenport University of February 24. Western State will travel to Arizona to play Northern Arizona on February 28.
