The Utah men’s lacrosse team broke even last week by beating Utah Valley by the score of 21-9 and later falling to No. 7 Colorado State by the score of 12-6.

Utah (4-3, 1-1) played in-state rival Utah Valley (1-1, 1-0) on Thursday and came away with a 21-9 win. Utah led 15-4 at halftime and never looked back. Senior attackmen Ryan Watts led the team with five goals and two assists. Fellow attackmen Pat Guinn also had five goals and managed to get one assist in the winning effort.

“We put a lot of goals in the back of the net, but we were a bit more sloppy than I would have liked to be,” said Utah head coach Craig Morris.

On Sunday, Utah faced conference rival No. 7 Colorado State (8-3, 1-1) at Juan Diego High School in Draper, Utah. Colorado State came out fired up and took a quick four goal lead. Both teams had good looks at the net Utah was able to score two goals back-to-back to cut the Rams lead to two goals. Colorado State would score two more while Utah managed to find the net once to trail at halftime by the score of 6-3.

Utah and Colorado State went back and forth scoring one after the other until Colorado State put the game out of reach by scoring three straight goals to win 12- 6. Junior midfielder Mike Calvert and senior midfielder Cory Merrell each had two goals for Utah. Sophomore attackmen Paul Larson had three goals for the Rams.

“We are a little disappointed we didn’t show better,” said Morris. “We were ready to play better than this.”

Utah will face No. 15 UC-Santa Barbara on Wednesday at 4 p.m. on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City.
