Utah blows out Wyoming, eases past Northern Arizona

The University of Utah men’s lacrosse team beat Wyoming 25-0 on Friday and Northern Arizona 11-5 on Sunday.

Utah didn’t waste any time on Friday by scoring just 14 seconds into the game. Utah midfielder Chandler Sehlmeier scooped up the ball off the face off, drove to the goal, drew a double team and dumped the ball to attackmen Pat Guinn. Utah had a 8-0 lead after the first quarter.

Utah continued to dominate Wyoming and took a 17-0 lead into half time. Overall, 13 different Utes found the back of the net.

“We were pretty focused and were able to come out and execute no matter who was on the field,” said Utah head coach Craig Morris.”

Northern Arizona lost to Westminster on Saturday 9-6, but were still up the task of playing the Utes on Sunday. Both teams started the game with sloppy possessions and poor shots but Utah found the net first on a goal by midfielder Mike Calvert with 4:09 left in the first quarter. Utah would then go on to score two more goals in the next two minutes and had a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.

Utah went on to score two more goals before Northern Arizona managed to penetrate the Utah defense and score. Northern Arizona had an extra man because Utah had been called for an illegal body check and the Lumberjacks attackmen Drew Robertson found the back of the net to make the score 5-1 in favor of Utah. Both teams would score two more goals each before the second quarter ended with the score 7-3.

Just one minute into the third quarter, Norther Arizona was penalized for offsides and Utah midfielder Matt Qualey scored from outside the Northern Arizona man-down zone. Two minutes later Northern Arizona also scored on a man-up play to make the score 8-4. Utah scored two more goals in the third quarter taking a comfortable 10-4 lead into the fourth quarter.

Each team would score one goal in the forth quarter to end the game with the score 11-5 for Utah.

“I felt like we weren’t as sharp as I expected us to be,” said Morris. “We struggled with all sorts of little things. We certainly will take the win. Give credit to Northern Arizona, the came out and played hard.”

Utah (2-1, 1-0 RMLC) will face No. 13 Lindenwood on March 12 at Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Missouri. Northern Arizona will play Metro State on March 28 at Lumberjack Stadium in Flagstaff, Arizona.
