Two Types of Blog Posts

I was recently writing an email to my crew mates over at Code Greene when I realized that there are two types of posts that every successful blog should have.

The first one comes from unexpected places at unexpected times, much like this one. This post is crucial for blogs because it allows the author to write about whatever they want which allows them to be more creative and more personable. The author may write up something in 10 minutes and press “publish” without looking back.

The second type of post comes from being well organized. Perhaps it is a feature that you run on your blog or it is about a topic you regularly talk about. It is not random. It is thought over for weeks and undergoes many revisions. For me, it is my iPhone app reviews. I try to do them as quickly as possible, but usually it takes a long time to get them just the way I want them. I also think my stories about Utah and Westminster Lacrosse fall into this type of post as well.

I look to Matt Mullenweg and his blog for inspiration. Matt consistently posts well thought out articles and random stories.

What do you think? Do you have two blog types or more?
